Looking after my dad everyday for 24 hours was tough, but I was proud to do it. He was a true hardworking Scotsman, delivering coal in the morning, selling ice cream in the afternoon and driving taxis by night.
As he grew older, it was hard to watch him suffer with dementia, lose his sight and watch his health deteriorate.
But managing any challenge is down to you. Family is the most important, as this provides the fuel to be resilient, and for me, it was having a pint and a bet with my dad.
My sister and I now run a cafe as a family business. We show to same resilience in our working life to keep going when times get tough. I’m sure dad would be proud.
